R.D. Laing wrote the original reader’s report recommending Madness and Civilization, but who is he and what was his relationship to the anti-psychiatry movement? A nice article here.
For Laing it came down to a simple humanistic question: How could we ever hope to understand the processes and causes of madness without accepting the profound fact of the otherness of the patient? In Laing’s eyes this salient fact was resolutely ignored and the patient became almost invisible in the diagnosis, the already tormented self buried ever deeper under the fact and symptoms of the ‘illness’.
